I’ve been a huge fan of Toro Y Moi for a long time. When I first discovered Toro I was eager to get his newest album at the time. Streaming wasn’t a thing, so I went to my local CD store, Hastings, and asked the clerk for the newest Toro Y Moi album, I think it was "Underneath The Pine". I asked, “Do you have the new Torroh Ee Moy album?” The clerk very nicely corrected me and replied, “TOH-ROH E MWAH? Yes, right over here!” I thought back to this moment a lot, embarrassed, even though it really doesn’t matter, but I’m grateful that the clerk was a fan and kindly gifted me the pleasure of listening to Toro Y Moi for years to come.
I arrived to The Ogden Theater soon after Channel Tres started. I was excited to see him play, especially after listening to "Topdown" and "Raw Power". His DJ set consisted of groovy, house inspired songs mixed steadily and purposeful with a little R&B/hip hop influence. By the end of the set the crowd was vibing and ready for Toro Y Moi.
Toro was well prepared for the show. He moved and grooved the whole night. Him and his band played nice song after nice song. The songs from his latest album, “Outer Peace”, were blessing us throughout the set. Since this show, he’s even released a new mixtape, “Soul Trash”. Toro Y Moi was confident and comfortable during each song, leading the crowd in chorus throughout the night. I’m glad I got to see him live after all of these years. His huge musical catalog gave him an opportunity to showcase the variety of styles he’s perfected over the years. If you are a fan of indie synth pop, hip hop, lofi, chillwave, Washed Out, Beach House, Bibio, Caribou, check out Toro Y Moi and go see him and his band at their next show near you.
