Kacey Musgraves - #Phonetopia by Visible - 11.23.19

Kacey Musgraves played at #Phonetopia, a pop-up warehouse put on by Visible, a new phone company that has been making the rounds the past year or two. Once I reserved a ticket online, I was then required to tour their Phonetopia space in order to confirm my ticket. Earlier on the day of the show, I went to go through the space to confirm my ticket. There were a bunch of cops around when I arrived and it turns out they just finished snatching up an armed dude firing shots nearby. They understandably canceled Phonetopia for the rest of the day but still let me confirm my ticket, I was good to go for the night. I arrived to a couple of food trucks parked outside the warehouse and a few makeshift bars inside the venue. They gave me 2 free drinks because they didn’t accept any payment except with their own special card which I didn’t have. It turns out I was supposed to have received a card that’s the form of payment inside the venue, but I never received one. The bartender was cool and let me have my drinks and away I went. I found a spot by the sound booth and patiently waited for the show to start.

Kacey arrived with a strong stage presence and personality. With her was her band leader playing the banjo, guitar, and singing backup and another band mate playing an upright bass, keys, and backup singing. They played together in harmony with a few hiccups which made the show feel more casual. I felt lucky to get to attend such an intimate show. Kacey played most of her hits including Lonely Weekend, Rainbow and Oh, What a World. She also treated us to Glittery, her new Christmas song featured on her special just released on Amazon Prime. She covered Kean’s, Somewhere Only We Know, a pleasant surprise. Kacey spoke between songs, telling us about not wanting marriage but kind of falling into it and that she couldn't be happier. She joked about Denver and not smelling any weed in the venue, which got people to fill the air with smoke. Her personality was apparent and welcome, it felt like a living room set special for those in attendance. Towards the end, Kacey talked about her tour coming to an end and about not knowing what her next music will sound like and I’m curious to see where she goes with it.
